Baptism – Bautismo

The Sacrament of Baptism is the first of all the seven Sacraments ushering us into the life of Christ Jesus. Christ’s life, his Saving Death and Resurrection become our hope of new life. In baptism, we enter the Church, the Body of Christ; we become children of God and brothers and sisters to one another in faith.

El Sacramento del Bautismo es el primero de todos los siete Sacramentos que nos introducen en la vida de Jesús Cristo. La vida de Cristo, su muerte salvadora y su resurrección se convierten en nuestra esperanza de vida nueva. En el bautismo, entramos en la Iglesia, el Cuerpo de Cristo; nos convertimos en hijos de Dios y hermanos y hermanas unos de otros en la fe.

Who Can Be Baptized?

  • Infants and young children
  • Children over age 7 (through Children Faith Formation)
  • Adults (through OCIA – Order of Christian Initiation of Adults)

  • Bebés y niños pequeños
  • Niños mayores de 7 años (a través del proceso de Formacion de fe para niños)
  • Adultos (a través del proceso de RICA – Rito de Iniciación Cristiana de Adultos)

Requirement for Baptism

  • At least one parent must be Catholic
  • Parents should be registered and participating members of the parish or present the permission letter of the parish where they are registered.
  • Bring the birth certificate of the child.
  • Fill out the application for Baptism.
  • Parents must attend a pre-baptism preparation class
  • Sponsors/Godparents – Important
    • The Sponsors (Godparents) are chosen by the parents because they will be a spiritual guide and a model of the Catholic faith for the child. For this reason, sponsors must be Catholics who practice the faith, have received all the sacraments of initiation: (Baptism, Communion and Confirmation), attend weekly Sunday Mass and be registered in the parish they attend.
    • If the sponsors are married, they must be married by the Catholic Church. If they are single, they cannot live in a free union and must be free to receive Holy Communion. You need to provide a copy of the marriage certificate, for married sponsors, and Confirmation Certificate for singles.
    • The sponsors must bring the Baptismal Godparent Testimony Form (better known as a good standing letter) from the parish where they are registered.
    • Attend the pre-baptismal class, according to the Baptism Calendar. (The class must be 6-month-old or less by the time the baptism date).
    • If the sponsors are members of Saint Bernadette Parish, they must complete and sign the eligibility testimony form for sponsors.

Requisitos para el Bautismo

  • Al menos uno de los padres debe ser católico
  • Los padres deben estar registrados y participar activamente en la parroquia o presentar el permiso de la parroquia donde están registrados.
  • Deben presentar el acta de nacimiento del niño(a).
  • Los padres deben asistir a la clase de preparación bautismal
  • Padrinos – Importante
    • Los padrinos son elegidos por los padres porque ellos serán una guía espiritual y un modelo de la fe católica para el niño. Por esta razón los padrinos deben ser católicos practicantes de la fe, haber recibido todos los sacramentos de iniciación: (Bautismo, Comunión y Confirmación), asistir semanalmente a la Misa dominical y estar registrados en la parroquia a la que asisten.
    • Si los padrinos son casados deben serlo por la Iglesia Católica. Si son solteros; no pueden estar viviendo en unión libre y deben estar en libertad de recibir la Santa Comunión.
    • Deben presentar una carta de la parroquia donde están registrados.
    • Asistir a la clase pre-bautismal, según la fecha establecida.
    • Si los padrinos son miembros de la Parroquia de Saint Bernadette deberán completar y firmar el testimonio de elegibilidad para padrinos.

Baptism Preparation Class

Parents and godparent’s participation in a pre-baptism preparation class is required prior to scheduling Baptism. Classes are held on the first Friday of each month at 7:00pm. Outside parish classes are accepted with a certificate of completion.

Clase de Preparación Bautismal

Se requiere la participación de los padres y los padrinos en una clase de preparación para el bautismo antes de que se programe el bautismo. Las clases son el primer viernes de cada mes a las 7:00pm. Se aceptan clases fuera de la parroquia con un certificado de finalización.
